Panorama Mountain is a great hiking and family vacation destination boasting some of the most spectacular hiking in British Columbia. Hiking with kids can sometimes be a challenge – trees and stunning views don’t always “wow” kids. Ensuring hiking is fun for kids usually requires water, a creek, rocks to skip or rocks to climb on, hills to roll down, a boardwalk, stairs or some other interesting trail feature. Luckily, Panorama Mountain Resort has a few hikes that will have your kids excited about hiking! An added bonus is Panorama Mountain Resort’s chairlift access to half day hikes, full day hikes and backcountry treks so you can pick a trail that suits your family’s ability and energy levels. Here’s a few of our favorite hiking trails at Panorama Mountain and area:
- Fort Hide N’ Seek – One of our family favorites hikes is the Fort Hide N Seek hike that can be accessed from Panorama Mountain’s Mile 1 chairlift. Who doesn’t like a little boost to the top especially when you are hiking with small children? This short hike rewards all hikers with a sense of adventure to find the hidden play structure in the forest. And there are great views of the Columbia valley, Panorama Mountain Village and Greywolf Golf Course. The hidden play area is located near the top of the Mile 1 Quad. Once at the top you take a short downhill walk to the slides and playhouse of Fort Hide n’ Seek. It is a moderate climb back up to the chairlift but easily handled by kids. You also have the option of hiking back down to Panorama Mountain Village. Approximate time 45 minutes (not including playtime!)
- Cox Creek Trail – This is an easy 3.5 km trail that is mostly a downhill hike. This Panorama Mountain hiking trail can be accessed from the top of the Mile 1 Express Chairlift. Taking the Mile 1 chairlift up to the trail head will allow you to keep the hike short and give you an immediate reward of the view of the Columbia Valley mountain range and Panorama Mountain Village. The hiking trail starts past the Crazytrain ski run and then you head into the forest on a narrow path that twists and turns amongst the trees. You will hear the sound of running water as you reach Panorama Mountain’s Cox Creek. Once you cross Cox Creek, the hiking trail heads up and down a bit before emerging into the Founder’s Ridge Panorama Resort ski area. Gentle switchbacks return you back to Panorama Mountain Village. Approximate time 1.5 hours.
- Panorama Valley Trail – This trail is easily accessed from various locations around Panorama Mountain Village and is suitable for the whole family! This paved multi-purpose 5 km hiking loop is a great stroll for a family and wide enough for strollers. The hiking trail can be accessed from Panorama Mountain village where it rises above Greywolf golf course before descending to Greywolf’s Clubhouse and Cliffhanger Restaurant. The trail can then be accessed from across the road from Greywolf Golf Course parking lot where it rises again above Greywolf’s golf hole 15. It then winds down and along the cool rushing waters of Toby Creek. Panorama Mountain’s Valley Trail passes by Panorama’s Adventure centre, the tennis courts and mini-golf which is a perfect way to end a hike with the family.
